The question comes up sooner or later. How many arrows should I shoot per week to improve? Some people answer with a round, confident number. Here I give you what the papers say, which is a different thing: more precise in some areas, honestly uncertain in others, and still useful for thinking more clearly about how you structure your week.
The short version: the answer is not a universal number. It is a framework within which your number either makes sense, or it does not.
The real data: how many arrows competitive archers actually shoot
Start with the concrete numbers the literature reports, because the common impression in club settings often diverges significantly from what happens at higher levels.
A study compared two groups of competitive archers: participants at the 2012 German National Indoor Championship and those at the 2012 European Outdoor Championship. The national-level German archers averaged 108 arrows per session across 2.8 sessions per week, for a total of roughly 274 arrows per week. The elite European archers trained across 5.1 sessions per week, with 160 arrows per session, reaching close to 700 arrows per week. The difference is substantial: more than double.
A study analyzing 200 young elite archers at the European Youth Championship in Greece found an average of roughly 160 to 165 arrows per session, with approximately 5 daily sessions per week and a mean training volume of 14 to 15 hours per week. These were adolescents aged 16 to 17, competing at a high level.
A study on trained traditional archers reported a mean of 111 arrows per session across 1.6 training days per week: a context much closer to the recreational or semi-competitive archer.
These numbers are not prescriptions. They are descriptions of what actually happens in practice, and should be read with that in mind.
What happens after 100 arrows: muscular fatigue under the microscope
One area where the research gets more precise concerns within-session fatigue. A study measured the electromyographic parameters of 20 trained archers at baseline, after 50 arrows, and after 100 arrows in a single session. The findings are interesting, and somewhat uncomfortable for those who shoot high volumes without much attention to what is happening physiologically.
EMG parameters, particularly signal amplitude, tend to increase from baseline through the first 50 arrows: the system activates, warms up, and recruits more effectively. After 100 arrows the picture splits, with statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). The prime movers of the shot, the deltoid and upper trapezius, keep their activation high, or even push it higher: they keep working to hold the movement together. Some shoulder stabilizers, the infraspinatus and lower trapezius, which had risen at 50 arrows, now show a clear drop: this is the signature of muscular fatigue, the sign that those muscles can no longer sustain the same quality of recruitment.
What is equally notable is the other side of those findings. The group that habitually shot more than 100 arrows per session showed no significantly better ability to resist this fatigue compared to the group that stopped below 100. In other words, adapting to high arrow counts does not appear to offer measurable protection against the drop in neuromuscular quality beyond that threshold.
A note on limitations: the study had a small sample (20 traditional archers) and a cross-sectional design, not a longitudinal experiment. The conclusions warrant appropriate caution. But the core finding is solid: beyond 100 arrows in a single session, the pattern of muscular activation changes in a measurable way, and clear signs of fatigue appear in some stabilizers.
Volume and injury: a relationship more complex than it looks
This is where things get more complicated. In the study comparing national-level and elite European archers, the elite group shot more than twice as many arrows as their German counterparts, yet had significantly fewer overuse injuries: 36.4% versus 71.8% (P = 0.007). Those shooting more were getting injured less.
How does that make sense? The researchers point out that the difference is not in volume alone, but in context: more professional coaching, more refined technique, more structured periodization, and greater attention to stabilizer muscle conditioning. High volume managed poorly becomes a risk. High volume within a system built to support it appears manageable.
The point can be put directly: volume is not the primary risk factor. The system that manages it is: technique, periodization, and recovery. The data from that study support this empirically.
That said, the relationship between volume and risk does not disappear. The literature repeatedly cites arrow count as one of the contributing factors in overuse injuries, particularly at the shoulder. The point is that volume cannot be evaluated in isolation from everything else around it.
Volume is a risk factor, not the risk factor.
The elite European archers in the 2012 study shot around 700 arrows per week and sustained fewer injuries than their national-level German counterparts at 274. Arrow count is always evaluated within a system, never in isolation.
The particular case of adolescents: when load weighs more
Research on younger populations presents a sobering picture. Among 200 young elite archers with a mean age of 16.9 years, 43.5% reported shoulder pain during training, 30% used medication to continue training, and 31.8% had been forced to stop due to injury. More than half (52.3%) were receiving physiotherapy.
These rates are high. The study highlights how the combination of elevated training volume (around 160 arrows per session, five times per week), growth plates still maturing, and often insufficient sport-specific conditioning produces a cumulative risk.
For young archers, then, the answer to how many arrows is: fewer than you think, with more attention to technique than you might expect, and with load progression that is gradual and monitored.
Load progression: a practical framework without magic numbers
The broader sports science literature converges on a load progression principle that applies equally to arrow count: do not increase weekly volume sharply relative to the previous week. A commonly cited guideline is to keep weekly increases to around 10%.
In presentations on training load management, I have translated this into concrete tools: a daily arrow log, session RPE (perceived exertion multiplied by session duration), and the ratio of acute to chronic load over 7-day and 28-day windows. When recent load rises much faster than what the body has adapted to over the preceding weeks, risk increases. This signal deserves attention in archery just as it does in other sports.
This framework has not been validated in archery-specific longitudinal studies, but the underlying principle is robust. The body tolerates gradual increases far better than sudden jumps. A week of 300 arrows following three weeks at 150 is riskier than a slow progression toward the same total. The arithmetic of load has its own logic.
Quality versus quantity: a false opposition
Conversations about volume often drift toward a quality-versus-quantity debate, as if the two were in conflict. They are not, but there is an order of priority worth respecting.
Research shows that the EMG picture shifts after 100 arrows and fatigue starts to show. This does not mean shooting beyond that threshold is wrong. It means that arrows shot past that point are executed by a neuromuscular system already under stress. If technical quality is the goal, the final arrows of a long session are precisely when quality is hardest to maintain.
- Learning or technical correction phase: shorter sessions, maximum quality on each arrow, stop when quality visibly declines.
- Volume-building phase: gradual increases, fatigue monitoring, never pushing past thresholds that produce visible technical compensation.
- Pre-competition phase: volume decreases, concentration intensity and competition simulation increase. Fewer arrows, higher quality.
What the research does not yet tell us
One point deserves honesty: the literature on optimal training volume in archery remains limited. There are no randomized controlled trials comparing, for example, 150 versus 300 versus 500 arrows per week while measuring performance outcomes, adaptation, and injury risk over a large sample and an extended period. The available studies are largely cross-sectional, descriptive, based on small samples, or focused on specific populations.
What we have are snapshots: who shoots how much and who gets injured more often, alongside some physiological windows into what happens within a session, such as the EMG data on neuromuscular recruitment decline beyond 100 arrows. The dose-response studies that exist in running or strength training simply do not yet exist for archery.
This means any "science-based" volume prescription should be taken with appropriate skepticism. These are reasonable inferences, not validated protocols. Anyone who states with complete certainty exactly how many arrows you should shoot per week is simplifying more than the evidence allows.
What you can do with these data
Put the pieces together, and a practical framework emerges that holds for most archers.
- Under 100 arrows per session you are in a physiologically manageable range for almost everyone, including less conditioned archers. Technical quality can be the primary focus.
- Between 100 and 200 arrows per session you are working in a competitive training range. Muscular fatigue begins to factor in, and recovery becomes part of the training plan.
- Above 200 arrows per session you are in territory that requires a solid physical base, a consolidated technical system, and deliberate recovery planning. It is achievable, but not for everyone, and not during phases focused on technical correction.
- For weekly volume: increase gradually relative to the previous week, keep an arrow log, pay attention to residual pain. Shoulder discomfort that does not resolve within 24 hours is a signal that should not be ignored.
- For adolescents, the threshold for concern is lower. Technique and gradual progression come before volume, always.
The right number for you depends on your technical level, your physical conditioning, your bow draw weight, the phase of the season you are in, and how many weekly sessions you can sustain without compromising recovery. There is no single solution. It is a balance found over time, through attention and actual data, not by imitating whoever happens to shoot more than you do.
