In compound, peak draw weight is 55 to 70 lbs, but the actual holding weight is only 15 to 30% of that, due to the let-off. Here the choice depends more on the ballistics you want, speed for outdoor competitions, than on muscular endurance at full draw.

In instinctive and traditional archery, poundages are often lower (28 to 40 lbs for adults), because the priority is fine control, fluency, and long sessions. The shorter maximum distances typical of these disciplines, usually up to 30 to 40 metres, reduce the demand for raw arrow speed.

Draw weight for children and adolescents

For young archers who are still growing, choosing draw weight requires particular care. The developing musculoskeletal system is more vulnerable to overload, and the effects of a poor choice can become chronic over time.

The practice shared by coaches and manuals is to keep poundages very conservative for youth categories, so that young archers can build solid technique without overburdening structures still in development. As for the exact figures, which vary with age, build, and category, it is better to work with a coach than to trust a generic table.

For parents and coaches of young archers, the practical rule is straightforward: slightly below the recommended range is safer than slightly above. Natural growth will close the gap and then some, and an injury avoided in adolescence is a career preserved.
