The pre-competition week is one of the most important and least understood phases in competitive archery. Many intermediate archers ramp up their training in the final days, convinced it will leave them better prepared. It tends to produce the opposite result: they arrive at the line fatigued, with an overtaxed autonomic system and declining technical quality. The logic of tapering, the progressive reduction of training load ahead of competition, points the other way: arriving with a rested system and liberated fitness sets up the best conditions to express the score you are genuinely capable of.

This article covers the scientific principles behind tapering, how to structure the seven days before an important competition, and the concrete choices around volume, technical intensity, nutrition, sleep, and mental readiness. The goal is a practical map for arriving at every significant competition in the best possible shape, whatever your current level.

The science behind tapering

Tapering is the structured reduction of training volume in the days before your target competition, while keeping technical intensity constant or slightly elevated. The physiological logic is straightforward: the fitness you have built over months comes packaged with accumulated fatigue that masks your actual performance level. When you reduce volume, fatigue fades faster than fitness does, and performance rises toward its true ceiling.

Several studies across different sports have quantified the effect of a well-executed taper: a 2 to 5 percent improvement in peak performance. Those figures come primarily from endurance and strength sports. In archery, the recovery principle holds, but the specific magnitude has not been measured directly. In a discipline where five points out of 720 can separate a podium finish from a mid-table result, even a modest margin matters.

The three core principles of tapering applied to archery are: reduce arrow volume (by 40 to 60 percent relative to normal), maintain technical intensity (the quality of each individual arrow), and keep session frequency unchanged (no skipped days). Together, these allow the system to consolidate its adaptations without losing the motor patterns it has spent months building.

This structure suits most important competitions. For the highest-level events, national and international championships, some athletes extend the taper to 10 to 14 days. For the large majority of Italian amateur and competitive events, however, the standard pre-competition week remains the practical reference point.

Common mistakes in the pre-competition week

Mistake 01

Ramping up instead of pulling back

Increasing volume in the days before competition in the hope of arriving better prepared. The result is the opposite: accumulated fatigue that reduces actual performance relative to potential.

The principle is to reduce, not increase. Even when it feels counterintuitive, it is the direction training theory converges on.

Mistake 02

Last-minute technical changes

Adjusting a technical detail in the days before competition in the hope of gaining a few extra points. The result is technique that has not had time to settle and breaks down under competitive pressure.

All technical changes belong at least 4 to 6 weeks before competition. Never in the final seven days.

Mistake 03

Experimenting with nutrition

Trying new foods, supplements, or meal formats during competition week. This risks gastrointestinal reactions, unknown intolerances, and unpredictable effects.

Keep the tested nutrition routine. Competition day is not the time for experimentation of any kind.

Mistake 04

Irregular sleep

Late nights, inconsistent wake times, a demanding travel day the day before. Sleep quality across the competition week largely determines how the competition day itself unfolds.

Consistent sleep and wake times at least 5 to 7 days before competition. Plan travel and logistics to protect at least 8 hours of sleep the night before.

Nutrition in the pre-competition week

Nutrition during the competition week follows three key principles. First, continuity with your established diet: no drastic changes, stick with the patterns already proven in training. Second, stable blood sugar: lean toward low-glycaemic carbohydrates, regular meals, no large spikes or crashes. Third, consistent hydration: 2 to 3 litres of water per day, distributed across the day rather than consumed all at once.

In the final two days some athletes slightly increase carbohydrate intake to top off glycogen stores, though the benefit in archery, a low cardiovascular-demand sport, is marginal. More important is removing foods likely to cause digestive discomfort: anything very fatty, very spicy, or containing alcohol.

Mental preparation during the week

Pre-competition mental preparation cannot be improvised on the morning of the event. Building it across the preceding week is one of the most productive investments you can make.

Recommended practices include: daily visualisation, 10 to 15 minutes, of a clean shot executed under competition conditions; structured breathing morning and evening to stabilise the autonomic state; reviewing your competition plan (strategy, rhythm management, how to respond to difficult scenarios); and reducing unnecessary external stress (deferring optional commitments, sidestepping needless friction).

For those who have built mental skills over the preceding months, the competition week is the time to sharpen them, not to introduce new ones. Experimenting with unfamiliar mental techniques at this stage rarely produces anything useful. Refining what is already in place, by contrast, tends to get the most out of the long-term work you have done.

Competition day logistics

The logistical details of competition day are frequently underestimated, but they have measurable effects on performance. Planning them in advance reduces stress and eliminates unnecessary variables.

Travel to the venue should be planned with generous margins. Arriving 60 to 90 minutes before the start leaves time for a proper warm-up, equipment setup, and resolving any last-minute technical issue. Arriving in a rush noticeably hurts the quality of your preparation.

The competition kit is packed the night before, using a written checklist: bow and accessories, spare arrows (at least a dozen extra), technical tools (hex key, tape, wax), clothing appropriate to the expected weather, food and water for the full duration, membership card and registration documents.

The warm-up at the venue follows a fixed sequence: 5 to 7 minutes of joint mobility, 5 to 7 minutes of muscular activation with a resistance band, 12 to 18 arrows at a short distance, then 12 to 18 more at competition distance, followed by a final breathing session with the pre-shot routine. In total, typically 30 to 45 minutes for longer competitions, less for shorter formats.

During competition: managing your rhythm

Once the competition is underway, rhythm management has a large influence on the final outcome. Four principles guide the decisions you actually make.

The first is an identical routine for every arrow, regardless of the previous score. A 10 and a 6 are shot with the exact same sequence. Altering your routine in response to a previous result introduces variability that tends to compromise the arrows that follow.

The second is managing the pauses between ends. Sit when you can, drink regularly, take a short structured breath. Do not replay previous arrows, do not watch your competitors' scores. Attention stays inward, on your own process.

The third is a strategy for unexpected situations: what you do if rain starts, if the wind picks up, if you lose an arrow, if the competition runs behind schedule. Having the answers ready in advance lowers the decision-making stress in the moment.

The fourth is focus on the single arrow. A competition is built from independent arrows, and the total is simply the sum of the attention given to each one. Thinking about the final score while shooting an arrow harms that arrow. Thinking about the arrow in your hand, while it is in your hand, creates the best conditions for that execution.

More than technique, more than talent, it is arriving with a rested autonomic system and liberated fitness that largely determines the result. The taper is the least spectacular skill in competitive preparation, and also the most strategically significant.

Post-competition: closing the cycle

Managing the period after a competition is part of the preparation process, even if it is easy to overlook. Three practices help close the competitive cycle properly.

Active cool-down: 10 to 15 minutes of light mobility and slow breathing immediately after the competition ends. This helps the autonomic system return to baseline. Then water and a light snack. Only then does it make sense to switch off technical focus completely.

A dispassionate debrief: in the 24 to 48 hours that follow, an honest assessment of the competition. What worked and what did not, which technical and mental elements held under pressure and which gave way. Written notes that become material for the coming months of training.

Structured rest: 2 to 3 days of reduced volume after important competitions. The system has drawn down considerable nervous and psychological resources. Rest is what restores them, preventing accumulated fatigue from carrying into the next cycle.

These three steps, applied consistently, turn every competition into a learning opportunity and, over time, into the gradual building of real competitive skill.

Managing calendars with closely spaced competitions

A recurring challenge in competitive calendars is handling competitions that fall close together, when a full week-long taper is not practical because there are only a few days between events. Three strategies help in these situations.

Prioritising: identify the most important competition in the sequence and build your taper around that one, accepting that you will arrive at the others not fully recovered. Peaking for every event is not possible. Better to decide deliberately where to be at your best.

Micro-tapering: for competitions 3 to 4 days after the previous one, still reduce volume by roughly 50 percent in the intervening days, even if a complete taper is not feasible. Even partial recovery improves the quality of the second competition.

Accelerated recovery: targeted techniques to recover more quickly between competitions. Extra sleep, thorough hydration, considered nutrition, physiotherapy support where available. For athletes with dense calendars, this becomes a genuine skill to develop in its own right.

Your first important competition

For those preparing for their first major event, a regional championship, a first national experience, a few additional considerations beyond the principles already covered can help manage the emotional intensity that inevitably rises.

The first is to lower your expectations about the result. A first important competition is above all a learning experience, not just a placing. The realistic goal is to execute your routine as well as you can, not to win or finish in a particular position. Freeing yourself from expectations about the result tends to free the performance itself.

The second is to get to know the setting in advance. If you can, visit the field in the days before, talk with archers who have competed there, and study the specific rules of the event. Fewer surprises on competition day means less mental stress.

The third is to have support nearby. A training partner, a coach, a family member who knows your preparation: having people in your corner on competition day genuinely steadies you. Turning up to your first major competition completely alone tends to amplify anxiety well beyond what the situation warrants.

First important competitions are rarely your best in pure performance terms. They are, however, the most formative. Approached with that perspective, the experience turns from a potential disappointment into a guaranteed chance to grow.

Documenting your competition experiences

One habit that is consistently underestimated, but pays considerable dividends over time, is documenting each important competition in a systematic way. A simple competition diary, updated in the 24 to 48 hours after the event, gradually builds a personal database of experience from which future decisions can draw.

What is worth recording: the preparation plan for the week, including any deviations; sleep quality in the 3 days before; what you ate on competition day; weather and field conditions; perceived technical quality end by end; what worked or did not on the mental side; surprises and how you handled them; the objective result; and, kept separate from the score, how satisfied you felt.

After 6 to 10 documented competitions, personal patterns begin to emerge. Which type of taper works best for your system, which nutrition holds up better under pressure, which mental practices are genuinely effective in your case, and under which competition conditions you tend to underperform, so those can be prepared for specifically.

This level of self-knowledge, built on your own evidence rather than generic advice, is what distinguishes the serious competitive archer from the recreational competitor. It does not replace the guidance of an experienced coach, but it complements it with data no one else knows as well as the archer does, when they analyse themselves honestly.

The competition diary requires no sophisticated tools: a notebook or a shared document is enough. What matters is consistency (every important competition recorded) and honesty (a genuine analysis, not a self-congratulatory one). Over a few years it tends to become one of the most valuable competitive development tools you have.

Reducing volume instead of ramping it up, sleeping more instead of shooting more, holding the routine instead of experimenting: these are the counterintuitive choices that tend to produce the best performances. Those who understand them and apply them with discipline build stable competitive careers. Those who keep pushing through to the final day tend to stay trapped in cycles of fatigue and performances that fall short of their real capability.
