Archers more dependent on their smartphone shoot lower scores
1 study · 30 archers measured
The summary today
There is a single study, from 2023, of thirty Indonesian club archers: they complete a questionnaire on nomophobia, the fear of being without a smartphone, and then shoot thirty-six arrows at 40 metres. The fifteen most dependent average 168 points, the fifteen least dependent 188, a difference of twenty points, and two archers out of fifteen among the most dependent reach the 180 to 269 score band against eleven out of fifteen among the others. It is a cross-sectional comparison, and it does not say which comes first: those more attached to their phone might train less, sleep worse or be younger, and none of this was controlled for. The journal has questionable editorial standards: the registry reports the study but does not use it to decide the status, which remains not studied. It is also a different question from the one about using social media before a competition, which concerns the moment rather than the habit.
Also phrased as: "nomophobia"; "phone addiction"; "smartphones and concentration"; "too much screen time"
In practice
Young archers are often told that a phone in the pocket during training breaks concentration, and that those who spend hours on it every day find it harder to stay with the shot.

Venue with questionable editorial standards: this result does not count towards the status. 30 Indonesian club archers split into two groups of 15 by a nomophobia questionnaire, then 36 arrows at 40 metres: high nomophobia 168.07 points, low 188.40, a difference of 20.33 (t = 4.861, df = 28, p < 0.001).

Status history
- 2023 Not studied The first and only data: thirty Indonesian club archers complete a questionnaire on smartphone dependence and then shoot thirty-six arrows at 40 metres. The fifteen most dependent score 168 points against 188 for the fifteen least dependent, and among the highly dependent only two in fifteen reach the highest score band observed. A single cross-sectional study, with no control for experience or training volume, in a journal with questionable editorial standards: the registry reports it but does not use it to decide the status, which remains not studied.
