For high-level archers wind is the main thing to manage outdoors
1 study · 65 archers measured
The summary today
The only data come from Korean archers and from a question asked in a particular way. In 2025 sixty-five high-level archers, with an average age of 18 and an average of 327 out of 360 at 70 metres, described in an open questionnaire, phase by phase, how they shot one of their arrows into the X. In the aiming and release phase the most cited theme is wind management, 76 mentions out of 157, almost half, and within that theme the thing named most often is adjusting the strength of the shot (58 times). In the draw and anchor phase, however, the external condition cited most is quiet, 31 times, against 11 for good weather, 7 for no wind and 6 for light wind. Wind therefore dominates the moment of aiming, not the whole shot sequence. And the study measures what archers remember about their best shots, not how many points the wind costs: reported, on a single nation.

In practice
Anyone who shoots outdoors hears that competitions are won by reading the wind and that technique counts until the flag lifts: managing the wind is seen as the real test of an experienced archer.
