A quick, honest caveat, because it matters: what follows is my hypothesis, not settled science. It draws on the neuroscience of movement, it makes predictions you can test, and it has weak spots, which I lay out. I put it forward because it is the cleanest way I have found to fit together pieces that, on their own, refuse to add up.
Calling it mental covers only one part
It is true that the head plays a part. But stopping there leaves the questions that actually matter unanswered. Why is it the release that goes, and not the draw or the aim? Why does it so often show up all at once, from one day to the next, rather than creeping in slowly? Why does telling someone to relax do so little? And why does going back to close range, with no target face, beat sheer willpower?
A purely mental account predicts none of this. Nor does a purely physical one: if a muscle or a nerve were giving way, it would not switch on and off with the size of the stakes. And that is exactly what it does: it vanishes when the target does not matter, and returns the moment the pressure is on. The problem sits squarely in between, part body and part head, and that is where it has to be looked for.
Two ways to run a gesture
It starts from a simple fact: a movement can be run in two very different ways, and the difference is everything. In the first, the command is worked out in advance and fired off without waiting for the senses to report back; engineers call it open-loop control, I call it automatic. In the second, the movement is watched as it unfolds, checked against what the eyes and body report, and corrected on the fly; that is feedback, or closed-loop, control.
Aiming and holding lean on feedback the whole time, and rightly so: they last long enough to be corrected. The release does not.
The release is too fast to be watched
This is where the numbers matter, because they are the whole point. The release itself, the fingers opening and the string slipping away, lasts a handful of milliseconds, around ten. The feedback loop, the time the eye needs to catch that something is off and send a correction, runs more than ten times slower, over a hundred milliseconds. Put plainly: by the time a correction is ready, the arrow is long gone. There just is not time to watch the release as it happens and fix it. That is why a good release cannot be steered; it has to fire on its own. The best releases feel as if they go off by themselves, and that is exactly what they do.
My hypothesis: the release de-automatizes
So here is the idea. Under pressure, with the fear of blowing the shot that matters, the release regresses: it drops out of the automatic, soft control that years of practice had built, and back into the watchful, stiff control the motor system reaches for whenever something feels shaky. But that watchful mode is far too slow for a ten-millisecond gesture. A ballistic action forced under conscious control can only come out wrecked: frozen, snatched, punched. Target panic, on this view, is the de-automatization of the release.
The key move here is simple, and worth pulling out on its own: the fault is not a broken part. It is a control mode that is perfectly healthy in general, switched on exactly where it does not belong. It is the mode you lean on to learn a new movement, the right one when you are a beginner. On an expert's release, it is poison.
Nothing breaks. What changes is the way you run the gesture.
The automatic, soft release drops back into conscious, stiff control that is too slow for a ballistic move. Hence the freeze, the snatch, the aim that drifts off centre. I call it de-automatization, and it is my hypothesis, one to be tested.
Why this reading holds together
This view clears up the earlier questions, one by one. Why only the release: because it is the one truly ballistic gesture, the only one that cannot survive being watched. Why all at once: because a stiffness that climbs slowly can cross a threshold and tip a clean release into a freeze from one shot to the next; the collapse is sudden even though, underneath, the cause is building smoothly. Why telling someone to relax does not help: it is weak advice, because at best it takes a little tension off, but it does nothing to rebuild the automatism, which is the very thing that broke. Why blank bale works: shooting up close, with no target and no score, strips away the outcome that trips the surveillance, and gives the gesture room to become automatic again.
And above all, it settles the old body-versus-head argument. On this view the two are not rivals: pressure (the head) makes the control regress, and the stiffened gesture (the body) is what follows. Cause and effect, not two opposing teams.
Where I could be wrong
I hold this as a hypothesis, not a verdict, and that matters. In the essay I set out seven predictions that would sink it if they came out the wrong way. For instance: the antagonist co-contraction during the release should scale with the stakes, gradually, and stay specific to the release; and the physiology underneath should shift smoothly while the visible gesture flips sharply at a threshold. If that is not what happens, the idea is wrong, and I will say so. That is exactly why it is worth writing down: so that someone can try to take it apart.
