Each circle is a study: its position gives the year, its row whether it is for, against or context, its size how many participants it measured. Light circles are studies on other populations or without archers.

Archers show side-to-side differences in shoulder strength and mobility. A German study compared archers who shoot from both sides with archers who shoot from one: the former did not show the shoulder asymmetries found in the latter. It is a one-off comparison, so it does not show that shooting from both sides prevents them, and no study in the bibliography has assessed compensatory gym exercises.

Also phrased as: "shooting with the other hand"; "muscle imbalances in archery"; "bilateral training for archers"; "compensating for archery asymmetry"

In practice

Because shooting loads the two sides differently, it is often advised to balance things with exercises for the opposite side or with some arrows shot from the other side.

Status history

  1. 1990 Not studied No study in the registry's bibliography had yet assessed whether training both sides changes archers' asymmetries.
  2. 2021 Reported A comparison of archers shooting from one or both sides associates bilateral shooting with fewer shoulder asymmetries.
