Changing something in the equipment gives relief from target panic

The summary today
On this question there are only accounts, and they point the same way without saying how much or for how long. Among seven British archers interviewed about their own target panic, for several of them the problem hit one bow type more than the other, and one, at national level, managed it better with a compound because it took away the chance to control the shot in minute detail. At a university club one archer found his aiming calmed down when the coach removed the fibre optic pin from his sight, and according to the study's author permanent changes to equipment worked, while temporary ones gave only temporary relief. The same author, who had target panic, tells the other side: changing equipment eased his symptoms, but the way of shooting that resulted no longer appealed to him, and he stopped. These are two qualitative studies on few archers, with no measure of either the symptom or the score, and they also show that relief from the symptom and the wish to keep shooting are not the same thing.
Also phrased as: "changing bows for target panic"; "removing the sight pin"; "new release aid for target panic"; "equipment and freezing on aim"; "target panic remedies"
In practice
It is said that sometimes changing one thing, a different clicker, a new release aid, the sight pin, is enough for the block to clear, and that the relief lasts only until the novelty becomes habit.

7 British archers with target panic, with 3 to 18 years of practice, interviewed and analysed with interpretative phenomenological analysis: for several participants the problem was stronger with one bow type than the other, and a national-level archer managed it better with a compound, which took away fine control of the shot. Qualitative data, without counts.

An ethnography of an English university club, with autoethnography and interviews: the coach removes the fibre optic pin from an archer's sight and his aiming calms down; according to the author the archers had more success with permanent changes to equipment, while temporary changes give only temporary relief. A qualitative observation.

In the same study, the author's own case, an amateur archer with five years of practice: changing equipment eased the symptoms, but he did not like the way of shooting that resulted, and gave up altogether. Relief from the symptom did not save the enjoyment of shooting.

Status history
- 2019 Reported The first data come from long interviews with seven British archers who had or had had target panic, from club to national level. For several of them the problem hit one bow type more than the other, and one managed it better with a compound, because it took away the elements of fine control. A strategy coaches often use, shooting at a blank boss, worked for several of them only until the target face came back. It is an account, on few archers and without measurements: reported.
- 2023 Reported An ethnography at an English university club adds a second account pointing the same way: the coach removes the fibre optic pin from an archer's sight and his aiming calms down, and according to the author permanent changes to equipment work where temporary ones give only temporary relief. The same study shows the reverse side: the author, who had target panic, eased his symptoms with a change of equipment but stopped shooting, because the way of shooting that resulted no longer appealed to him. Two qualitative studies, without measurements: reported.
