What it measured and what it found
Four Indonesian researchers put 31 primary-school children, members of archery clubs in Central Java and Yogyakarta and training regularly, through a battery of ten tests in order to classify them by their talent for archery. The tests were height and weight, arm span, a kinaesthetic perception test, sit and reach, standing balance, wall sit, a side-support arm endurance test, a hand-grip dynamometer, a general endurance test and a shooting test.
The only result reported is the final distribution on a scale from 0 to 100: 12 children "very talented" (81 to 100), 5 "talented" (61 to 80), 8 "fairly talented" (41 to 60), 6 "not talented" (21 to 40) and none in the lowest band. There are no figures for the individual tests, either per child or as means.
How it was measured
It is a descriptive study with a sample chosen by the authors on the coaches' advice. The shooting test was done at 15 metres, with a standard bow and six ends; the paper says that basic technique, consistency and score all counted, but not how they were assessed. For the other nine tests it gives only the name and the reason it considers each one relevant to archery. It does not explain how the ten results were turned into a single score from 0 to 100, with what weights or against which reference norms. The analysis stops at a frequency table.
The method explained: Field fitness tests
Limitations
Without knowing how the score was built, and without the test data, the classification can be neither checked nor reused. Nobody followed the children over time, so it is unknown whether those judged most gifted went on to become better archers, which is exactly what matters for a talent test. The sample is small, the children's exact age is not given, and the reasons linking each test to archery (sit and reach compared with the position at full draw, for example) are the authors' arguments, not findings.
What it means for archers
For anyone coaching children the study shows a set of tests a club could use to describe its young archers' physical condition, but it provides no norms, no weights and no evidence that the battery identifies talent. The study is not enough to justify attaching a label to a primary-school child, and the authors themselves note that a child who seems to lack aptitude today may simply need more time.
