What it measured and what it found

The study looked for what goes with a better score in young beginners at the end of a basic recurve course. At a middle school in Kırıkkale, Turkey, 35 pupils started and 17 were measured: 11 girls and 6 boys from the fifth, sixth and seventh grades of the Turkish school system (ages are not given). The score came from 6 arrows at 10 metres, with a mean of 16.00 points and a standard deviation of 8.00.

Only one measure was linked to the score: a test of throwing a tennis ball at a target on a wall (mean 14.53, standard deviation 3.12), with a correlation of 0.507 (p=0.038). Shoulder position sense, measured at 60 and 90 degrees of abduction, the lengths of the hand, forearm, upper arm and arm span, and body mass index showed no significant correlation with the score. The authors also report that the boys did slightly better than the girls on both the throw (r=0.52) and the shooting (r=0.44), and that on the shoulder test the reproduced angles tended to fall short of the target angle.

How it was measured

The design is correlational, with a single measurement after the course: there is no before-and-after and no comparison group. Pupils could take part if they were right-handed, free of chronic illness and new to archery; anyone who did not attend regularly or broke the safety rules was excluded. The dominant eye was identified with the small-hole-between-the-hands method described in World Archery coaching manuals.

Position sense in the right shoulder was measured with a digital inclinometer fixed above the elbow: the pupil felt the target angle and then reproduced it three times with eyes closed, at 90 and at 60 degrees of abduction. The motor test involved throwing 10 tennis balls with the dominant hand from 3 metres at three concentric squares on a wall (10, 30 and 60 centimetres across, centred 1.5 metres from the floor), scoring 3, 2 or 1 depending on the square hit, and was done twice. The shooting test took about five minutes per pupil, including warm-up and practice arrows. Relationships between the measures were calculated with Pearson's correlation.

Limitations

Seventeen pupils is a small sample, and it is half the number who started: the authors suggest running such studies during lesson time so as not to lose participants. Six arrows at 10 metres is a very unstable measure of shooting ability, all the more so in beginners, as a standard deviation of 8 points on a mean of 16 shows. With around ten correlations calculated and no correction, a single one that only just clears the threshold may simply be chance.

The paper says little about the course: on equipment it states only that recurve bows were used, suited to right-handers, and it does not report how many lessons there were, what draw weight or what target face. The tables give the mean reproduced shoulder angle, not the error relative to the target angle, which is the usual measure of position sense. The link between throwing and shooting could come from something else, such as sex or maturity, which varies a great deal between children of this age, and a correlational study cannot separate these factors.

What it means for archers

For anyone teaching archery to children, the study offers an idea rather than a finding: in a small group of beginners, those who threw a ball at a target better also shot slightly better at the end of the course, while shoulder position sense and body measurements told nothing. That fits the idea that general coordination matters most at the start, but with 17 pupils and six arrows each it remains an observation to check on larger groups.

It does not justify using the throwing test to select children or to predict who will become good, and it says nothing about experienced archers. Likewise, the finding that arm length had no bearing on the score applies to this group, shooting at 10 metres with equipment the paper describes only as recurve.
