Among young archers, trust in the coach is what keeps them wanting to carry on

1 study · 220 archers measured

A single Korean study of 220 middle and high school recurve archers at the 2007 national championships. In the structural equation model, the intention to keep shooting depends on trust in the coach (coefficient 0.669), while interaction with the coach and satisfaction with training count only by passing through trust: their direct paths to the wish to carry on were not significant and were removed. The final model fits the data well, but it gets there after being adjusted on the same data: the starting model did not fit (p = 0.006). In the model, satisfaction is captured mainly by the relationship with coach and teammates (loading 0.80), much less by technical and physical progress (0.42) and the facilities (0.46): this describes how the questionnaire measures satisfaction, not a ranking of what matters most to the youngsters. The limits are those of a questionnaire filled in at a single moment: it measures the stated intention to carry on, not who actually quits; all the measures come from the same athlete, which tends to inflate the links between them; and the direction of the arrows in the model is the authors' hypothesis, which the data are compatible with but do not prove. A regional journal, and no replication outside Korea.

In practice

It is said that young people stay in archery for the coach more than for the results, and that when the relationship does not work they quit even if they shoot well.

220 Korean middle and high school recurve archers (125 boys and 95 girls) at the 2007 national championships, a questionnaire on a 5-point scale and a structural equation model. Paths in the final model: interaction with the coach to satisfaction 0.792 and to trust 0.487; satisfaction to trust 0.465 (p = 0.003); trust to intention to carry on 0.669 (all the others p < 0.001). The direct paths from interaction and from satisfaction to continuation were not significant and were removed, and one error covariance was freed; the starting model did not fit (χ²(31) = 54.19, p = 0.006), the adjusted one did (χ²(30) = 33.94, p = 0.283, CFI 0.997, RMSEA 0.021). In the satisfaction factor the highest loadings belong to relationships with coach and teammates (0.803) and the training programme (0.700), the lower ones to the facilities (0.461) and technical and physical progress (0.418), subscales of two items each; continuation is captured better by the perceived likelihood of carrying on (0.926) than by the stated wish to do so (0.751). A regional journal.

Status history

  1. 1984 Not studied Nobody in the registry's bibliography has yet studied what keeps a young archer in the sport, or what part the coach plays in it.
  2. 2008 Reported A questionnaire on 220 young Korean archers, read through a structural equation model: the intention to carry on depends on trust in the coach, with a coefficient of 0.669, while interaction with the coach and satisfaction with training act only through it, so much so that the direct paths were removed as not significant. The model that fits well is the one adjusted after looking at the data, because the first did not fit. It is a single cross-sectional study, all gathered with the same questionnaire and in a regional journal: reported.
