Training at home with the coach following online lowers young archers' anxiety
1 study · 32 archers measured
The summary today
There is a single Malaysian study, born during the 2020 lockdown: thirty-two junior recurve archers train at home for eight weekly sessions with the coach connected on Google Meet, and before each session they answer the competitive anxiety questionnaire. From the first week to the eighth most of the somatic symptoms reported decline: those who say their heart is "not at all" pounding go from none to fourteen, those who do not feel their body tight from eleven to twenty-two. Not all of them move the same way, though, because sweaty hands get worse: those reporting them "not at all" fall from fifteen to three. These are counts of answers, with no statistical test, no comparison group and no way of separating the effect of the online coach from that of getting used to the sessions or to isolation. The study appears in a journal with questionable editorial standards: the registry reports it with its figures but does not use it to decide the status, which remains not studied.

In practice
Since the lockdowns it has been said that following young archers remotely, with a video call while they train at home, is enough to keep them calm and stop anxiety building before the return to competition.

Venue with questionable editorial standards: this result does not count towards the status. 32 Malaysian junior recurve archers during lockdown, eight weekly home training sessions with the coach on Google Meet and the CSAI-2R questionnaire before each session. From the first week to the eighth, those answering "not at all" to "my heart is racing" go from 0 to 14, to "my body feels tight" from 11 to 22, and those feeling "very much" jittery fall from 7 to 4. These are counts out of 32, which the table labels as percentages, with no statistical test.

Venue with questionable editorial standards: this result does not count towards the status. In the same study one symptom goes the other way, contrary to what the authors write: those with "not at all" sweaty hands fall from 15 in the first week to 3 in the eighth, and those with "somewhat" sweaty hands rise from 11 to 23.
