In youth clubs, about one archer in four comes out as poorly motivated to train
3 studies · 67 archers measured
The summary today
No study yet says how many young archers train with little motivation, because the two surveys that try only measure who sits below the average of their own group. They are Indonesian, from 2021. In a school club of forty-five young archers, twelve fall into the two lower motivation bands and fourteen into the two upper ones, and the goals dimension is the only one in which the low outnumber the high, fifteen to thirteen. In a youth training centre of twelve athletes a quarter sit in the low band, and the weakest drives are those tied to the training method, the social setting and personality. The problem lies in how the bands are built: in both studies they come from the very group being measured, in the first at half a standard deviation below the mean, in the second exactly at the lowest score observed, with a table that does not add up. With thresholds like these part of the group necessarily falls below the middle band, so poorly motivated means less motivated than teammates, not poorly motivated in absolute terms, and the quarter comes from the method more than from the young archers. The only later study, from 2025, listens to ten young Filipino archers and tells another side of the same question: among the things they enjoy most are travelling to competitions and the group of people who share the same passion.
Also phrased as: "motivation in young archers"; "unmotivated youngsters at the club"; "young archers' drive to train"; "motivation in youth archery programmes"
In practice
Anyone who runs youth groups will say it: some of the young archers come to the range because parents or friends bring them, shoot half-heartedly and leave after a season.

Full census of an Indonesian school club of 45 archers, 45-item questionnaire: motivation very high 4 (8.9%), high 10 (22.2%), medium 19 (42.2%), low 9 (20%), very low 3 (6.7%), so 12 in the two lower bands against 14 in the two upper ones. The bands are cut on the mean and standard deviation of the same sample (thresholds 196.63, 179.13, 161.63 and 144.12): part of the group falls below the middle band by construction, so the share of poorly motivated archers is not a measurement and the finding stays as context.

In the same club, of the three dimensions of motivation the goals dimension is the only one in which the low outnumber the high, 15 to 13. For drive it is 14 high against 13 low, for feeling 13 against 12.

12 archers from the PPOP youth centre in Jakarta, a motivation questionnaire whose number of items cannot be read with certainty (the text says 18, the indicator table numbers 17 and runs up to item 21): mean 82.08, standard deviation 6.47, minimum 72 and maximum 94; 25% in the high band, 50% in the medium and 25% in the low, with thresholds that coincide with the lowest and highest scores observed. By dimension, the low band holds 66.67% for training method and social setting and 83.33% for personality, while the drive tied to results is the highest (50% in the high band).

Semi-structured interviews with 10 secondary school archers in the Philippines: among the themes that emerged, joy and positive experiences gathers travelling to competitions with other archers and the group that forms among people who share the same hobby. It does not measure motivation, it describes what sustains it.

Status history
- 2021 Not studied Two Indonesian surveys in the same year. In a school club of forty-five archers, twelve sit in the two lower motivation bands against fourteen in the two upper ones, and the goals dimension is the only one in which the low outnumber the high. In a youth centre of twelve athletes a quarter sit in the low band, and the drives tied to the training method, the social setting and personality are the weakest. The bands, however, come from the mean of the same sample, and in the second study the thresholds coincide with the lowest and highest scores observed: they say who is above and who is below within the group, and part of the group falls below by construction. How many are poorly motivated in absolute terms nobody has measured: not studied.
- 2025 Not studied A qualitative study arrives on ten secondary school archers in the Philippines, interviewed about their experiences. It does not measure how many are poorly motivated, but it says what keeps young archers at the range: among the things they enjoy most are travelling to competitions with other archers and the group that forms among people with the same passion. It is context, not a count, and the question remains unstudied.
