What it measured and what it found

This is a master's thesis from Gümüşhane University in Turkey. A d2 attention test given in four middle schools in the town centre identified 142 pupils with an attention deficit; among those with no sporting background, no chronic illness and no regular medication, volunteers were split into a group that did eight weeks of archery and a control group that carried on with school as usual. By the end there were 13 in each, with mean ages of 12.85 and 12.38.

In the archery group the number of symbols worked through on the test (TN) rose from 336.08 to 524.54, total performance corrected for errors (TN-E) from 286.15 to 503.38 and concentration (CP) from 123.00 to 221.54, while fluctuation from one line to the next (FR) fell from 25.38 to 13.85. The control group also improved in part: TN from 382.62 to 423.46, TN-E from 295.54 to 374.31 and CP from 125.15 to 165.00, with a significant rise for TN-E and CP.

Comparing the two trajectories favours the archery group on TN, TN-E, CP and FR, with partial eta squared values of 0.445, 0.449, 0.276 and 0.375. For omission errors, commission errors and total errors the difference between groups is not significant (p 0.099, 0.873 and 0.107).

How it was measured

The d2 test is a sheet of 14 lines of 47 characters: the task is to cross out every "d" with two marks, 20 seconds per line, about 4 minutes 40 seconds in all. It was given at school by final-year psychology students trained for the purpose, before and after the eight weeks. The programme took place in the archery hall of the sport sciences faculty, three times a week (Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, from 5 to 7 pm), for 24 sessions; it was run by six final-year coaching students under the supervision of a level-three coach.

The progression is set out week by week: introduction and safety rules with stance; drawing with an exercise band, grip and posture; drawing the bow without an arrow, anchor and line of sight; the first steps of a 12-step technique; the full 12 steps and the first controlled shots at 5 metres; repetitions with breathing control and attention exercises; target games and small competitions; a final review with team competitions. At 5 metres they used World Archery indoor recurve triple-spot faces. The analysis uses t-tests and a mixed group-by-time analysis of variance; a preliminary calculation gave 24 participants as the minimum.

The method explained: Cognitive and attention tests

Limitations

The groups were not randomly allocated: they were formed according to the pupils' availability, the preferences of schools and families and the ability to attend. Four of the 17 pupils in the archery group dropped out because they did not come regularly, and the analysis keeps only those who stayed. The control group did nothing: the archery group had 48 extra hours of group activity, supervised by young instructors, in a new place, so the effect cannot be put down to archery as such. The thesis does not say whether the testers knew which group each pupil belonged to.

Scores on the d2 test improve with repetition alone, and the control group did rise on TN-E and CP. The archery group started lower on TN (336 against 383) and on its percentage, with differences close to significance (p 0.095 and 0.102), and those who start lower have more room to rise. Some figures are inconsistent: the control group's starting FR fluctuation is 23.30 in Table 2 and 17.31 in Table 4 and in the analysis; total errors (14.11 and 14.82 at the start) are far lower than the sum of the two error types that should make them up, with no explanation of the scale used. The attention deficit is defined by the d2 screening, with no threshold given, and is not a diagnosis. There is no follow-up and no measure of shooting; the thesis was approved by an examining committee but has not been through journal peer review.

What it means for archers

The thesis looks at archery as an activity for young people with attention difficulties, not at how archers perform. It shows that after eight weeks of beginner lessons the pupils who shot had improved on the d2 test more than those who had done nothing. The result is compatible with an effect of archery, but with an inactive control, no random allocation and a group that started lower, archery cannot be separated from the attention of the instructors, the group and the novelty.

For anyone teaching young people, the description of the programme remains useful, as it follows a classic progression: exercise band, drawing without an arrow, technique in steps, first shots at 5 metres, games and competitions. In the registry it counts as weak evidence on beginners who practise archery as an activity.
