What it measured and what it found

The authors go back over twelve seasons of the Ukrainian recurve national team, from 2007 to 2018, listing the best international results of each year and the team's places in the World Archery world rankings. On that basis they split the period into three ways of building the year, defined by the number and type of competitions on the calendar: preparatory, control, selection and main events.

In the first, from 2007 to 2013, control events dominate; this is the period of Viktor Ruban's individual Olympic gold in 2008 and the men's team's fourth place at the same Games. In the second, 2014 and 2015, control and selection events carry equal weight (3 to 4 of each, with 2-3 main events and 1-2 preparatory ones): the men's team wins the first European Games but fails to qualify for Rio 2016. In the third, from 2016 to 2018, selection events dominate, 4 to 6 a year, and according to the authors results drop somewhat; the women's team does well at the European Championships that awarded Olympic places, without repeating it at the Games. In the world rankings Ruban's best place is eighth in the World Cup ranking in 2007, and Anastasia Pavlova stays in the top 50 of the World Championships ranking for four years.

How it was measured

There are no participants in the usual sense: this is an analysis of documents. The authors collect the national team's results at the major events (Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cups, European Championships and European Games), with qualification score and place, placing in the head-to-head rounds and team events, and positions in the two rankings World Archery keeps for the World Cup and the World Championships. They then classify each season by how many events of each type it contained and group similar years into three variants, set out in tables of results year by year.

Mathematical statistics are listed among the methods, but the text contains no calculation of any kind: the results are placings discussed in words. Training load is not described anywhere, even though the title refers to annual preparation.

Limitations

The three variants coincide with three consecutive periods, so they change along with everything else: the athletes on the team and the stage of their careers, the coaches, the international calendar, which added the European Games in those years, and the rules, with the set system reaching individual matches in 2010. Crediting the 2008 gold or the 2016-2018 dip to the way events were spread through the year is the authors' reading, which the data presented cannot test: there is no comparison, no measure of training load at all, and no record of minor events.

The description of the first variant is unclear: the sentence saying control events dominate then gives four figures (2, 3-4, 5-6 and 1) without making clear which category each belongs to. The text calls the 2008 Beijing Games the "XXIV Olympiad", when they were the XXIX. The paper is in Ukrainian, with summaries in Russian and English, in a national university journal.

What it means for archers

For archers, and for coaches too, the paper is mainly a chronicle: it tells how one federation spread its competitions over the years and what it won. It does not show that a calendar with more control events gives better results than one with more selection events, because the periods being compared differ in too many ways. It remains an example of a practical question every national team faces, namely how many selection events to fit into an Olympic season, but the answer has to come from studies that measure load and results in the same athletes over time.
