It is probably the most common question on the range, the one every archer asks sooner or later: "why do my arrows go left?" Or right, or low, or high. The honest answer is that a single arrow cannot tell you. But a group of arrows can, and it says a great deal. The trouble is that almost nobody looks at the target the right way. We look at it to find out how we did, not to understand why.

Changing that gaze is the first real technical jump. You stop reading the target like a report card and start reading it like a medical report: a set of signs that, taken together, point you toward where to look. They do not hand you the diagnosis ready-made, but they narrow the field quickly, and they save you from spending months fixing the wrong thing.

The target is a report, not a verdict

The first rule is also the hardest to follow: never read a single arrow. One arrow on its own means almost nothing. You can land a perfect one by luck and a terrible one from a flicker of distraction, and neither tells you how you actually shoot. What matters is where the arrows end up when you look at ten, twelve, a whole series.

The reason is statistical, not philosophical. Every shot is the sum of many small variables: the pressure of the hand on the grip, the exact point where the string touches the face, the milliseconds of the release, one extra heartbeat. Some of these variables are random and cancel out across the group. Others are systematic: they repeat identically on every arrow and push the whole group in the same direction. Only by looking at the group can you tell one from the other.

So from here on, forget the single bad arrow that made you angry. Look at the whole group on the target, and ask yourself two questions in the right order.

Two questions before all the others

Before you even ask "why to the left", ask two other things, because they point to different problems, each solved in a different way. First: is the group tight or wide? Second: is it centred or off? These are two separate things. You can have a tight group that sits entirely off centre, or a wide group that is roughly centred, and they are opposite situations.

This distinction looks obvious written down here, but it is the diagnostic mistake I see most often. An archer has a wide group, moves the sight because "the arrows go left", the group stays wide just a little further over, and they keep chasing. The point is simple: moving the sight shifts the centre of the group, it does not tighten it. If the problem is dispersion, the sight has nothing to do with it.

A tight but off-centre group is almost good news. It means your movement is repeatable, that you are doing the same thing on every arrow, and that this thing simply points a little off centre. It is a sight or tuning correction, a matter of minutes. The wide group is a different, longer job: it is consistency, and it is built on the movement, not on the sight screw.

The shape of the group is a signature

Once you understand that you are reading dispersion, look at the shape it draws. Not all wide groups are the same: a group stretched vertically comes from a different place than one stretched horizontally, and one scattered at random tells yet another story. The shape does not hand you the diagnosis, but it narrows the field before you even touch the equipment.

If the group stretches up and down, it means that something between one arrow and the next is changing how high or low the shot lands: a draw length that is not always the same, an anchor that rides up and down a touch, a release that sometimes leaves a moment early and sometimes late. If instead it stretches left and right, look at the release, clean on some shots and plucking sideways on others, the bow hand turning a little, the head and the string not lining up the same way every time.

The round group, scattered more or less everywhere, is the hardest to read, because it almost never has a single cause. Usually it is many small things adding up, and it is the classic group you get when fatigue sets in at the end of a session, or when your head is not there: the routine breaks down and every arrow goes its own way. The two separate groups, on the other hand, tell you something precise: you are shooting in two different ways, perhaps a clean release and a "grabbed" one, or you changed something mid-session without noticing.

Horizontal or vertical: which way to look

Now we reach the original question. If the group drifts mostly sideways, or mostly up and down, the likely causes are different, because they come from different parts of the movement. A warning, though: what follows are tendencies, not laws. They depend on your dominant hand and your bow type, and they always need checking on the individual archer. Use them as a starting map, to know where to begin looking.

Sideways, the release matters most: a string left dirty, a sideways pluck, a bow hand that rotates even a little. Then the alignment between head and string and, on the equipment side, arrow spine and centre shot. If the group is compact but shifted sideways, look at tuning first; if it is scattered sideways, look at the release.
High / Low

Up and down, the consistency of draw length and anchor rules: a few millimetres of difference are enough to raise or lower the shot. Then release timing, back tension through the finish, the nocking point. Outdoors and in 3D one more suspect appears: a misjudged distance.

"Left equals pluck" is the kind of shortcut that wastes time. The same direction, for a right-hander and a left-hander, or a recurve and a compound, comes from different causes. Use the axes to decide where to start, then verify with a test. They tell you where to look, not the answer itself.

The method: one variable at a time

Reading the pattern is half the work. The other half is resisting the temptation to change three things at once. Serious diagnosis works like an experiment: you isolate one variable, change it, measure again. If you change grip, nocking point and sight in the same afternoon and the group improves, you will never know which of the three helped, and you will not be able to repeat it.

The first step is to have enough arrows before you conclude anything. At least a dozen, at the same distance. A single flyer is not a pattern, it is noise, and it deserves no correction. The second step is to call your shot: before you look at where it went, tell yourself where you think it landed. If your calls match the target, you feel your errors as you make them, and they are execution. If they do not match, you have a tuning or perception problem, and that is a different road.

The third step is to separate the levels. A shot you felt go out badly is not data about the tuning of the bow: it is execution, and it should be dropped from the equipment analysis. To remove aiming and isolate the movement, blank bale work, shooting at close range without a target face, remains the best tool. To check tuning objectively, comparing a fletched arrow with a bare shaft says a lot about spine, nocking point and clearance without your having to interpret feelings. Then you change one thing, and you go back to measuring.

When it is not (entirely) your fault

Not every pattern comes from the movement. Some arrive from outside, and correcting technique when the cause is external is the fastest way to get worse. Wind and light shift the group with the conditions: if the group shifts when the flag moves, you are not making a mistake, it is blowing. A group that walks with the weather is not a form fault.

Then there is the equipment. An old string that has gone off, a nocking point that has crept over time, a rest that has worked loose, a clicker cord that has shifted, or a set of arrows with uneven spine: all of these draw patterns that look like your own errors. The practical rule is simple: if a pattern appears suddenly without your having changed anything in the movement, suspect the equipment first. The body changes slowly, a screw does not.

An off-centre group moves with the sight. A wide group does not.

Confusing the two is the most common diagnostic mistake, and it is why so many archers spend months chasing the sight when the problem was the release. Read the dispersion first, then the direction. The sight fixes where the group points; technique fixes how tight it is. They are two jobs, and they must be done in the right order.

The questions I get asked most

Why do my arrows go left or right?
If the group is compact but shifted to one side, it is almost always a matter of sight or tuning, and you fix it in minutes. If it is scattered sideways instead, look at the release and the bow hand: a string left dirty, a pluck, a bit of torque. And remember that for a right-hander and a left-hander the same direction can have different causes.

Why do my arrows go high or low?
Up and down, the consistency of draw length and anchor is what rules: a few millimetres of difference between one arrow and the next are enough to raise or lower the shot. Then release timing and back tension through the finish. Outdoors and in 3D, it is often simpler than that: you misjudged the distance.

My group is wide: should I move the sight?
No. Moving the sight shifts the whole group but never tightens it. A wide group is a problem of consistency in the movement, not of aiming: you work on technique, not on the sight screw.

How many arrows do I need to read a pattern?
At least a dozen, at the same distance. One or two arrows out are not a pattern, they are normal. And change one thing at a time, then measure again, or you will never know what worked.
