A single study of beginners, with no comparison group, finds more self-confidence after a course. In 2022, at an Indonesian university, seventy beginners take nine one-hour lessons over three weeks with plywood bows and PVC arrows, and their self-confidence questionnaire score rises from 48.0 to 53.5 on a 20 to 100 scale (p < 0.001). Without a group that does not shoot, there is no telling how much of that rise comes from the bow and how much from taking up a new activity with others, and during the pandemic, with COVID-19 rules in force, at that; the journal is regional, with a table that does not fit the scale. An older account points the same way: in 2017, at a Turkish secondary school, some of the thirty-two students who had taken twelve archery lessons mention self-confidence among the things they gained, but these are interviews, with no questionnaire, in a journal with doubtful editorial standards, and they do not count towards the status.
